SideQuests: WonderCon 2016

June 2, 2016

On today's Side Quest, the OSN crew goes to WonderCon 2016 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Day 1

On the first day of the convention we got to see the opening ceremony which featured the mayor of Los Angeles, Mayor Villaraigosa who was very excited to be hosting WonderCon in the city of LA. He spoke a little bit about his love for comic books as well as future plans for hotel development near the convention center to help attract large scale conventions to Los Angeles. Let's keep our fingers crossed for LA Comic-Con in the future.

Once the opening ceremonies were done, we made our way over to the exhibit hall to check out the exhibitors and vendors. There were so many booths to check out you don't have time to see them all, but the one that caught my eye was the Nintendo booth where they had demos of some of the upcoming and recently released games such as Pokken TournamentHyrule Warriors LegendsMetroid Prime Federation Force and Star Fox Zero where you got to play the demo in an Arwing Cockpit which was pretty awesome.

After the test flight for Star Fox Zero, I got to see the Valiant Comics panel:Valiant 101. To be completely honest, I did not know what to expect from the Valiant Comics universe, but I was very pleased to find out that I fell in love with it. The panel not only gave you the 1 on 1 time with the staff and creators to answer any questions, but also introduced you to this wonderful universe and the characters that inhabit it. From what I saw at the panel, I would recommend Archer & ArmstrongImperium and Faith if your looking to read something interesting.

The last panel of the day was the Spotlight on Jim Lee panel where he drew some sketches and spoke on his creative process of drawing backgrounds and faces which was very informative. As he was drawing, Jim Lee took questions from the fans in the audience which ranged from art related questions to personal ones such as "What is your biggest inspiration?" The panel was very light and funny, giving you a little insight on Jim Lee as not only a professional in the comic book industry, but him as a person.

Even though we did not get to do everything on the first day on WonderCon, it was still tons of fun and gave us a better understanding on how the comic book industry works.

Day 2

The next day of WonderCon began with the DC:Universe Rebirth event which was live streamed here for those who have missed it. The room was packed to full capacity with excited DC fans waiting for the next chapter for our beloved DCU characters. I have to say I was not disappointed in the least. From the way that everyone spoke about each and every rebirth title with excitement and passion, to the concept and design with amazing art to the gift to the fans of lowering the price of every rebirth title to $2.99 everything was amazing. I may have walked into the panel tired and sleepy, but afterwards I walked out excited and full of hope for the upcoming Rebirth titles slated for May and June.

Day 3

On the last day of WonderCon, before I left the convention center I got to catch the encore screening of Justice League vs. Teen Titans at the Microsoft Theater. The movie was in my eyes well done and very entertaining if crowds cheers and laughter were anything to go by. WonderCon may be a smaller con than San Diego Comic-Con, but don't let that fool you into thinking that you will not be getting your moneys worth for your badge. It is a very fun and enjoyable experience for comic book fans of all ages and levels so go check it out next year at the Anaheim Convention Center from March 31- April 2.

See you next year!
